In our latest blog, we discussed the industry’s current stance on renewable fuels and what their place could be in the future of sustainable aviation. We are huge advocates for creating a sustainable solution for the future, and we were encouraged to see that others are championing the use of sustainable fuel solutions as well.
Jane Hupe, the Deputy Director for Environmental Protection at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), has recently written about her support of the uptake of alternative fuels. Much like we discussed, she feels that there is a long way to go, but that there is a possibility for alternative fuels to be utilised by airlines in the future.
The uptake of alternative fuels – and renewables in particular – is heavily reliant on creating an initial demand. In her article, Jane states that currently around 2% of commercial aviation jet fuel demand is comprised of alternative fuels. However, this could easily rise to a much larger percentage in the future.
Opportunities are there, and the industry is making headway. Aviation is the first commercial sector to commit to limiting carbon emissions over the next 20 years, and a number of schemes and initiatives are already in place to make it a priority.
We are looking forward to working with organisations such as ICAO to develop and highlight the benefits of alternative fuels, and to secure their future within aviation.
