Last year the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) signed up to the global Carbon Offsetting Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), committing to manage CO2 emissions across the industry by monitoring and offsetting emissions levels on international flights, and we are pleased to see that it has had brilliant levels of uptake already.
Over 60 states have voluntarily adopted the scheme, which will start in 2021 – 6 years before the scheme becomes mandatory.
The industry’s commitment to sustainability was also reinforced at last months International Air Transport Association (IATA) 73rd AGM, where a resolution supporting the production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels was approved.
Although it is encouraging to see that sustainability is still supported by the industry as a whole, the attitudes towards renewable fuels themselves can differ across the globe.
At eJet International we are working closely with several airport operators on projects that may increase the demand for renewable fuels, but these will need to increase before renewable fuels can become a regular option for airlines. We believe demand will increase over the next 10 years, with exciting developments emerging all the time, and we fully intend to be part of this journey by continuing to work with other organisations in its development and uptake.
There is a long way to go, but renewable fuels can and will play a part in the future of a sustainable aviation industry.
